Thesis Title: The Forum and the City: Rethinking Centrality in Rome and Roman Italy
Dr Ray Laurence
Dr Simon Esmonde Cleary
About
My research focuses on the evolution of patterns of movement, particularly to and through fora, in Rome, Pompeii and other cities in Roman Italy. I am interested in seeing how these spaces were used, how their connective role in the landscape changed from shortcuts to obstacles, and what this meant for the way they were perceived (both by the users and by historians). I am interested in architecture and movement as socio-cultural metaphor, and in Roman urbanism more broadly. My interest in centrality is both in how it is symbolically represented and practically constructed. I am currently writing up my PhD thesis on this broader theme.
Among other things in the pipeline are an edited book on movement and space and various papers on topics from the representation of centrality in visual media to the management of Rome's centro storico in terms of patterned movement. I have taught a First Year Project on the City of Rome at the IAA for the last two academic years.
